No Temperature Dial

You’re probably familiar with the basic steps of getting ready to iron. First, you plug in the iron. Next, you adjust the temperature dial to the correct setting for the type of material you’re ironing. This must be done with care or else you run the risk of scorching your delicate fabrics.

Now, that’s the usual way of doing things, but a Philips Azur Advanced GC4938/20 steam iron is different. This iron features Philips’ OptimalTEMP technology, and there’s no temperature dial on the unit – because it doesn’t need one.

Rather, the Azur Advanced puts out one consistent low temperature that’s suitable for both delicate and hardy iron-safe materials. You can even leave the iron sitting on your garment without worrying that it will burn through the fabric or leave dark marks behind.

Extra Steam Power

The Azur Advanced’s low temperature doesn’t keep it from doing its job well. Rather, because the iron produces strong steam, it’s able to tackle wrinkles in any sort of fabric without needing to operate at a high temperature.

Steam output is measured in grams per minute. When shopping for a steam iron, you should look for an iron that’s capable of at least 40 grams per minute. The Philips Azur Advanced is well above that minimum with an output of 55 grams of continuous steam per minute. According to Philips, this pushes 20 percent more steam through the fabric than standard irons.

In addition, there’s also a steam boost button that you can press whenever you have an extra-tough crease to smooth. When you activate this feature, the iron can put forth 240 grams of steam per minute.

Don’t worry if steam isn’t suitable for all of your ironing projects. There’s a switch you can flip to turn off the steam setting.

Other Beneficial Features

In addition to OptimalTEMP technology and impressive steam capabilities, the Azur Advanced also offers several other features that may improve your ironing experience.

For smooth maneuvering across your garments, this steam iron has a SteamGlide Plus soleplate made with a titanium layer. The soleplate also boasts six layers of non-stick, scratch-resistant coating.

3,000 watts of power help the iron heat up quickly. An indicator light lets you know when the unit is ready to use.

When you’re in a hurry to get your clothes into wearable condition, water drips from the iron can derail your progress. The Azur Advanced drip-stop helps prevent this problem.

Irons, especially those used in areas with hard water, tend to build up limescale, also known as calc. Limescale deposits can compromise the iron’s performance and leave stains on clothes, so regular cleaning is critical. To simplify this task, the Azur Advanced features Quick Calc Release technology. There’s a built-in calc collector that you can easily remove for emptying. According to Philips, the process takes just 15 seconds. The iron also has an indicator to let you know when it’s time to empty the calc collector.

For safety, the iron is equipped with an automatic shut-off feature. If you leave the iron resting on the soleplate, it will turn off after just 30 seconds of inactivity. When you rest the iron in its upright position, the auto shut-off will kick in after eight minutes.

Caveats and Conclusions

While the Azur Advanced is packed with great features, it’s not the top-of-the-line model in Philips’ Azur collection. Upgrading to the Philips Azur Elite will give you DynamiQ technology that regulates steam output and provides up to 75 grams per minute of continuous steam.

Even still, the Philips Azur Advanced could an excellent choice for your home. It may offer a big step up in ironing technology compared to the less-powerful steam irons to which you’ve become accustomed. With the striking blue Azur Advanced, you’ll get even heat generation and impressive steam production for all your ironing needs.
